Cat Sitter Recounts The Light Bulb Incident

I am a writer, and I do a lot of phone interviews for my stories. The second I get on the phone, my cat Charlotte drops whatever she is doing and rushes over to the desk (if she isn't already on the desk) and works feverishly to distract me from my conversation. For instance, just a few minutes ago, I was on the phone with a subject, discussing President Barack Obama's Web savvy and trying to sound professional, intelligent and insightful despite the fact that I'm marginally professional, marginally intelligent and marginally insightful at best. I was doing a great job faking it until Charlotte touched the light bulb on my new desk lamp. She didn't scream, but she did bolt off the desk and began furiously licking her paw. I had to tell my subject what happened because I blurted out, "Oh my God! Charlotte!" He then confessed that his cats were acting up, too. I thought I heard them meowing in the background!

Why do cats feel compelled to sabotage phone interviews? If anyone has the answer, please tell me.

Also, in case you are wondering, Charlotte didn't learn her lesson. A few minutes after I got off the phone, I caught her on the desk again, sniffing the light bulb.

Actually, she didn't touch it with her paw this time, so maybe she did learn her lesson, after all.
